Tennis in the United States is played on three kinds of places: public park courts run by a city or county, member clubs and country clubs with their own pros and leagues, and commercial tennis centers that sell court time by the hour. Public courts are usually free and first come, first served, with a posted limit (often 60-90 minutes when others are waiting); busier cities run online reservation systems with a small fee and a permit for the season. Indoor courts are rented by the hour and booked days ahead in winter. Most facilities are hard courts; clay is common in the Southeast and at private clubs, and grass is rare. Lights extend play into the evening at many parks, sometimes with a coin or app-operated switch.

They privatized the courts. It’s really disappointing and ruins the sense of community. The tennis courts were Never full before and now even fewer people are able to use them. I’m a resident of seven hills (literally same zip code) and I’m unable to access the courts now. What if seven hills privatized their community center? It’s sad and was completely unnecessary.

These courts used to be the ones to be at, always with great people. Now most gates are locked up with chains (likely a fire hazard and against fire code) with a central access door and courts sit empty. Really disappointed to see this for a public good. What's next, the kids play area? Each city excludes people who are different?

As of April 1 you need to scan a Civic Center ID to access the courts, which you can only obtain as an Independence resident.
